Guardian Corps of America is a Street Organization!  Our representatives work on a Direct Outreach basis 24 hours a day. We engage directly with homeless veterans and homeless citizens.  All product contributions are distributed directly to homeless veterans, and homeless citizens.

 IMPORTANT:  Call the main number when trying to reach a representative at 630 - 415 - 3281.  GCA representatives are assigned to work in a specific area. 

GCA is a STREET Organization working on a Direct Out Reach basis. Hours of operation are on a 24 hour basis.   Our representatives work on a Direct Outreach Basis.  GCA is operational on all three (3) shifts throughout the day.

Hours of operation for Shelters and Drop Off Sites vary according to locations.  Some locations require advance notice.

When calling GCA leave a message. No answer, leave a message. We will respond within a 24 hour period.  Contact GCA using our website. Go to Our Contact Us Page and complete the profile form, and submit your request.  A GCA representative will be in contact within 24 to 48 hours. 

If you experience an emergency, dial 911 and report your emergency to the respective EMERGENCY agency. 

Hours of Operation:  GCA representatives are available on all shifts throughout a 24 hour period.  Drop Off Sites and Storage facilities are open only during business hours (see below) for hours of operation.

*GCA Shelter ( Drop Off Site ) in Cook County is located at 6915 Stanley Avenue, Berwyn, IL. 60402.  Thomas O'Brien, shelter manager.  Hours of operation:  9am to 6pm Monday - Friday,  Saturday 9am to 3pm.   * Please call in advance before delivering goods to this Drop Off Site (Shelter).  Call ( 708 ) 788-0106. 

*GCA pick up and drop off site:  949 South Garfield Street, Oak Park, IL.  708- 406 - 6023 or 312 - 753- 8438.  Please call in advance to schedule a pick up or drop off.  Manager Esther Grachan.  Hours of operation are flexible and all orders must be scheduled in advance. 

*GCA (Drop off Site)  in DuPage County is located at 440 N. Stewart Avenue, Lombard, IL. 60148.  William (Billy) Gebel Jr., Area Coordinator for DuPage County. Call Direct at 630 - 379 - 6609.  It is required to call in advance before dropping off items at this location.  This is a satellite (product) shelter. 

* (Drop off Site) in Will and Kane County Only.  call Robert Elwood at 630 - 405 - 4731. If you are a GCA volunteer and need supplies Robert can help you.   

*Request for Operation EDDA -Homeless Persons Survival Kits can be made by calling Tony La Piana at (630) 415 -3281, Thomas O'Brien at (708) 788-0106, Esther Grachan at 708-406-6023 or 312- 753-8438. 

*IMPORTANT: Appointments must be made in advance before dropping off items at Drop off Site's.  Call in advance using the Main Line at 630 - 415 - 3281.  Or call the Drop off Site directly and make your appointment with our representative/s.

As part of the GCA process volunteer forms must be completed by the candidate. References may be requested and required when applying for a position with GCA.

           Volunteer Positions Available:

1.   Grant Writers:  Experience in writing grants at the state, federal level, and county level. Write grants to help support the GCA mission. 

2. Clerical work: Light office duties.Work from home - part time hours or assiigned to a specific on site location.                         

3.   FREEDOM WRITERS:  Write letters that have an impact on our society.  Become a FREEDOM Writer for the GCA Mission and Cause.

4.   Computer Technician:  Raise awareness online for the GCA cause.  Work closely with staff and online supporters. 

5.   Area Representative:  Work with homeless veterans, and homeless citizens in the greater Chicagoland area.  AR will also engage those less fortunate, disadvantaged, and the poor.  AR will help support the AC and volunteers in their territory.  Recruit, Train and develop new volunteers in the organization. Public speaking skills are useful. Local nearby travel required.  

6.  Research Specialist:   Research information pertaining to the GCA Mission and Cause.

7.   Videographer:  Film Production for GCA events, campaigns, and projects.  Create film documentaries.

8.   Editor:  Internal and External Communications.  Work directly with the president. 

9.  Area Coordinator:  This is a supervisory role. AC is responsible for assisting ongoing field work and supporting strategies that will lead to support, growth and increase participation in activism around GCA's priority campaigns. Organize work related activities and work collaboratively with GCA's volunteers, Area Representatives, report directly to the Field Director.  AC will identify and recruit new supporters and advance GCA's human rights priority campaigns and programmatic work.

Requirements - Education within the chosen field and one (1) year of organizing experience or equivalent of education and experience.  Worked with a Non - Profit organization.

* Excellent Communication Skills including public speaking, training and facility required. 

* Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

* Team building, organizing, excellent presentation and facilitation skills are required.

* Experience and ability to work collaboratively toward GCA's shared goals.

* Must be able to work weekends and evenings as needed and willing to travel throughout the greater Chicago land area. 

10. Field Director:  manage, and implement a strategic plan to drive the GCA Mission and Cause in communities across the greater Chicago land area.  As Field Director You will recruit, train, and develop a platform for volunteers through grassroots activities such as phone banking, door to door canvassing, and neighborhood events based on the organization's strategic goals.  Field Director will supervise downline and help support the same in respective area's.   

Report directly to the president of GCA.  

 

  • Build grassroots relations with business, media and community leaders.
  • Mobilize GCA volunteers and grassroots activists on issues with the organization's mission.
  • Recruit, train and develop GCA activists and volunteers to become involved in phone banking, door to door canvassing, and neighborhood events throughout the Chicago land area, and organization mission, campaigns, projects, and cause, and develop GCA activists and volunteers for field organizing.  
  • Represent the organization by attending and speaking at local events for recruitment and educational purposes.
  • Organize and plan state and local events and other community meetings in order to increase organization visibility.

 

  • Experience with grassroots operations and/or event planning is preferred, but not necessary as organization will train candidate.  
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively with staff, in an exciting fast-paced, deadline-driven, environment.
  • Willingness to perform all duties as listed and any other duties assigned.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the Chicago land area. 
  • Proven ability to work remotely and in a home and office environment.
  • Competency in computer skills. 
  • Integrity, humility, and an entrepreneurial attitude. 
  • A can do attitude and an earnest interest in providing good community service support to our volunteers, partners and supporters.
  • A firm commitment to advancing the GCA Mission and Cause. 
  • Must have valid state driver's license. 

11.  Field Scouts:  GCA is always looking for good talented individuals who can act as scouts.  Our organization relys on individuals with a keen sense of observation in order to scope an area searching for struggling homeless veterans, and homeless citizens. 

A Field Scout will explore an area to obtain information about homeless veterans, and homeless citizens, and report back to the organization.  Must have excellent observation, written and oral communication skills, and be willing to travel throughout the greater Chicago land area. May be assigned to a sppecific territory.   Candidate will work with GCA Area Representatives, Area Coordinators, and others assigned in order to have a positive effect on change.  Valid state drivers license and reliable vehicle a must.  

12. Mat Making Specialist:  As a mat making specialist you will learn to crochet a sleeping comfort mat for the homeless veteran, and homeless citizen.  Classroom training is available and required.  See Home Page for more details reegarding this valuable product used for a sleeping mattress so homeless Americans do not have to sleep on a hard concrete pavement.   Work from home as an individual or form a group.
